In recent years studies in the United States, Europe and China have found that acupuncture is twice as effective as traditional western treatment for pain, including Pharmaceutical drugs, Physiotherapy and Chiropractic. Recently a study found that three forms of acupuncture, one including light stimulation of points with toothpicks, were all superior to western treatment for back pain.
Chinese medicine recognizes several patterns of arthritis, so that someone who feels pain when the weather is damp would receive different treatment than someone whose arthritis is worse with heat. As always the treatment of pain is customized to the strengths and weaknesses of the person.
Migraines are especially well-treated by Chinese medicine.
