Although humans have a genetic predisposition to like sweet foods, our diet has devolved significantly since paleolithic times. Instead of a diet primarily consisting of vegetables and fruits, with occasional whole grains in season and protein from game animals, we now have a diet of processed foods, based upon wheat and other starches, and factory-farmed animals. Our fat profile has gone from a paleolithic proportion of 2/1 parts Omega 6 to Omega 3, to the current 30/1 ratio. This “stiffens” the cell membranes so that insulin cannot carry sugar into the cells. Vital minerals used in the enzyme reaction are no longer in the soil due to factory farming methods. As a result, sugar hangs out in the blood, leading to increasing insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and ultimately type 2 diabetes.
Blood sugar dysregulation is not necessarily progressive. Diet, exercise, supplements, herbs and acupuncture can normalize blood sugar or reduce the need for medication.
In advanced diabetes, Chinese medicine can help circulatory disorders, ulcerations and other complications of diabetes.
Type 1 Diabetes is a completely different disease, most likely autoimmune in nature. Chinese medicine has often lowered the necessary level of medication and resultant side effects. However you need to coordinate with your doctor and your acupuncturist.
Blood sugar imbalances lead to cardiovascular disease, but this can be prevented by early treatment.
Chinese medicine is useful for:
- Hypoglycemia
- Metabolic Syndrome (Prediabetes, Syndrome X)
- Diabetes (Types 1 or 2)
- Complications of Diabetes
